Kendal Town 6 – 1 Skelmersdale Utd

by Frank Hughes

It was a frustrating night to say the least.

United made the dream start when they took the lead through Mark Bollongino in the 3rd minute. Kendal’s failed clearance left Bollongino with an easy slot home from close range. And for at least 23 minutes they looked like a capable unit, but Kendal stayed composed and took command of the game as you’d expect of the league leaders.

Skem were soon overwhelmed by the incessant attacks from a very well drilled Kendal team, and as soon as they’d bagged the first couple of goals the table toppers ran riot.

A hat-trick of headers by MOM James Bailey made a huge dent in Skem’s armour, but the truth of the matter was it was men against boys who capitulated under huge pressure.

A 25-yard speculative effort by Gabe Ellis was the closest Skem came to reducing the arrears, as his strike shook the crossbar.

A superb display by the league leaders and fitting tribute was magnificently observed with a minutes applause by a healthy crowd of 860 for the much missed former Kendal supporter and committee member Graham O’Callaghan who’d passed away earlier in the week.
